Mahama Orders Districts to Identify Flood Channel Obstructions
President John Dramani Mahama has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to identify structures and other obstructions blocking drainage channels as part of a renewed effort to tackle perennial flooding in Accra and other flood-prone communities.
The directive follows widespread flooding caused by heavy rains, which displaced residents, damaged properties and disrupted economic activities across parts of the capital.
Speaking after an aerial assessment of the affected areas, President Mahama said the flooding challenge requires both engineering solutions and strict enforcement against developments that obstruct the free flow of water.
He announced that the government will convene a National Security Council meeting to coordinate a nationwide exercise involving district assemblies and the Ministry of Works and Housing to identify and remove all major drainage obstructions.
“We’re asking every district to identify, together with the Works and Housing Ministry, where the blockages in the channels are as they pass through the district assemblies, so that we can earmark those places for removal,” the President said.
Mahama acknowledged that demolishing buildings constructed in waterways is often controversial, but insisted such actions are necessary to protect lives and property.
“We’ve said this many times. I’m tired of hearing it, but anytime you begin to take action and you start breaking houses, people think that government is inhumane. But when the problem arises, it affects everybody,” he stated.
The President stressed that the exercise would not end with demolishing illegal structures. He said all debris and rubble must also be cleared from the waterways to restore the channels’ full capacity.
“We’ll not only break the houses, we have to move the rubble out of the way, because there’s no use breaking a house and leaving the rubble in the waterway,” he explained.
Describing the operation as a major undertaking, President Mahama said the government remains committed to implementing lasting measures to address Accra’s recurring flooding and improve public safety.

Mahama Expresses Sympathy to Flood Victims, Announces Relief Support and Calls for Permanent Flood Solutions
President John Dramani Mahama has expressed sympathy to victims of the devastating floods that hit parts of Accra following Sunday’s heavy rains, assuring affected residents that government will provide immediate relief while pursuing lasting measures to tackle the capital’s perennial flooding.
Speaking after an aerial inspection of flood-affected communities, President Mahama described the extent of property damage as significant and conveyed his condolences to families and businesses that suffered losses.
“I just want to express my sympathy with people who have lost property. Loss of property has been very extensive,” the President said.
Mr. Mahama praised the efforts of the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, the 48 Engineers Regiment and other emergency response teams for their swift intervention.
He said he had watched videos of rescue personnel carrying stranded residents out of their homes and deploying boats to save lives in inundated communities.
“I’ve seen many of the videos where people had to be carried out of their houses. They deployed their boats, and they helped to save quite a lot of lives,” he noted.
The President announced that he has directed the Minister for Finance to release funds from the national contingency fund to support post-flood relief operations.
He explained that NADMO would continue identifying affected persons to ensure assistance reaches victims in the coming days.
“In the next few days, I’ve asked the Minister of Finance to release some money from the contingency fund so that we can do some post-flood relief for persons who have been affected,” he said.
Beyond the immediate response, President Mahama stressed the need for a permanent solution to Accra’s recurring floods, saying the country must move beyond responding only after disasters occur.
Using the analogy of someone who refuses to repair a leaking roof once the rain stops, he urged Ghanaians and relevant authorities to change their attitude towards flood prevention and take decisive steps to eliminate the causes of the annual flooding.
The President’s remarks come after widespread flooding submerged homes and roads across several parts of Accra, prompting emergency rescue operations and renewed calls for stronger flood mitigation measures.

GRIDCo, ECG Shut Down Mallam, Achimota Substations Over Flooding
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have temporarily shut down power supply from the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations following severe flooding caused by heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
In a joint press release issued on Monday, June 29, 2026, the two institutions said the precautionary shutdown was necessary to protect lives, prevent damage to critical electricity infrastructure, and ensure the safety of operational personnel.
According to GRIDCo and ECG, floodwaters have affected critical equipment at several substations, creating significant safety risks. They explained that the decision to switch off power supply was taken as a preventive measure until the floodwaters recede and engineers can safely assess the extent of the damage.
The utilities said they are closely monitoring the situation and conducting detailed assessments of the impact of the flooding on both the transmission and distribution networks. They warned that if heavy rains and flooding continue, additional power interruptions may occur in other affected areas where safety concerns arise.
GRIDCo and ECG urged the public to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any fallen electricity poles, exposed or fallen power lines, flooded electrical installations, or other electricity-related hazards to the nearest ECG office or through the company’s customer service channels.
They assured customers that every effort would be made to restore electricity supply as soon as weather conditions improve and it is safe to resume operations.
The two institutions also apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their patience, cooperation, and understanding as emergency response teams work to protect critical power infrastructure and ensure public safety.

Interior Ministry Urges Public to Stay Indoors as Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding
The Ministry of the Interior has urged Ghanaians to remain in safe locations and avoid unnecessary travel following heavy rains and flooding that affected several parts of the country on Monday morning.
The Ministry said people who are safely at home should stay indoors, while those at their workplaces or other secure locations should remain there until conditions improve.
In a statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Ministry cautioned motorists and pedestrians against driving or walking through flooded roads, bridges, and waterways, warning that rapidly rising floodwaters pose serious risks to life and property.
The statement noted that the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other emergency response agencies have been deployed to monitor the situation, assist affected persons, manage traffic, and conduct rescue operations where necessary.
Residents in flood-prone communities have also been advised to move to higher ground where it is safe to do so and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest security agency or emergency response service.
The Ministry urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency personnel, and rely only on official channels for information and updates.
Emergency assistance can be accessed through the Ghana Police Service on 18555 or 112, the Ghana National Fire Service on 192, and NADMO via 112.
The Ministry reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of the public remain the Government’s highest priority and assured Ghanaians that it will continue to monitor the situation closely while providing further updates as necessary. It also expressed concern for all those affected by the flooding and pledged continued support to ensure public safety.
