Ghana Premier League: Asante Kotoko SC Coach Karim Zito expresses disappointment after Heart of Lions defeat
Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has expressed his disappointment after their 3-1 defeat to Kpando Heart of Lions in the Ghana Premier League.
Coach Zito speaking to the media after the game, believes that it was an opportunity for his side to close the wide gap after league leaders Meadeama SC defeat to Nations FC last Friday.
The Porcupine Warriors headed into the match with renewed hope after Medeama dropped points a day earlier, knowing a victory would significantly strengthen their title push. Instead, Kotoko fell short, leaving Zito frustrated despite what he described as thorough preparations.
“This is football. I honestly was not expecting this scoreline because we prepared very well for the game,” Zito said. “Most of the goals we conceded came from set-pieces. We worked a lot on defending and attacking set-pieces in training, so maybe today could just be one of our bad days.”
“Medeama lost yesterday and today was our chance to close the gap. Honestly, I feel very disappointed. And I was not expecting this result because in terms of preparation, we worked very hard. We prepared extremely well,” he added.
“Kpando is always a very difficult place for Kotoko to come and play. But putting that aside, I had a plan to at least win this game. Unfortunately, it didn’t go the way I wanted it to.”
Asante Kotoko SC, despite the defeat are 3rd on the league standings with 35 points and will be hosting Hearts of Oak in the Super clash at the Baba Yara Stadium next week.

Midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi rejects €18M move to England
Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi have rejected an €18M offer from unnamed English Premier League Club on transfer deadline date.
The decision is said to be driven by his desire to secure regular playing time and boost his chances of making Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Viaplay.
The 20-year-old FC Nordsjaelland standout had reportedly attracted an €18 million offer just before the transfer window closed.
Nordsjaelland Sporting Director Alexander Riget admitted the offer was significant but stressed the club’s belief in the player’s value.
“It’s clear that 18 million euros is a lot of money, but if you believe the player is worth more, it’s easy enough to say no. Riget told Viaplay media.
His choice reflects a focus on regular playing time rather than an immediate high-profile move.
The Premier League team involved has not been revealed, but the sizeable offer highlights Yirenkyi’s growing reputation in European football.
The Black Stars midfielder has made 39 appearances for Nordsjaelland this season, scoring three goals and setting up six assists, and is contracted to the club until 2030.

Everton completes the loan move of Ghanaian forward Tyrique George from Chelsea
Everton have completed the loan signing of exciting young forward Tyrique George from Chelsea for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.
The 19-year-old England Under-21 international, who is of Ghanaian descent, joins the Toffees on deadline day as manager David Moyes looks to add pace, creativity and depth to his attacking options.
George will wear the number 19 shirt at Everton and is in contention to make his debut in Saturday’s Premier League clash away to Fulham.
Speaking after sealing the switch, George expressed his excitement at joining the nine-time English champions, describing Everton as a “massive club” with passionate supporters.
He also highlighted Moyes’ influence on his decision, praising the experienced Scottish tactician for his track record of developing young players.
London-born George joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of eight and progressed steadily through the ranks, earning his first-team debut during the 2024/25 season.
That campaign proved to be a breakthrough year, as he featured prominently in Chelsea’s successful UEFA Conference League run, starting eight matches as the Blues lifted the trophy.
He also played a role in their FIFA Club World Cup triumph later that summer.
In domestic football, George made eight Premier League appearances in 2024/25, scoring his first top-flight goal against Fulham.
This season, he added further experience with 11 appearances across competitions, registering three goals, including one in the UEFA Champions League.
George has represented England at multiple youth levels and is currently a regular with the U21
His move to Everton is expected to provide him with more consistent playing time, while also boosting the Toffees’ attacking threat as they push for a strong finish to the season.
