President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Lusaka, Zambia, for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic, trade and economic relations between Ghana and Zambia.

President Mahama touched down at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at the invitation of Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema. He was warmly received by President Hichilema, alongside Ghana’s High Commissioner to Zambia, Madam Elizabeth Nyantakyi. The Ghanaian leader is accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama, and a high-level government delegation.

The visit is expected to deepen cooperation between the two African nations, with bilateral talks scheduled between the two presidents. Discussions will focus on enhancing diplomatic relations, boosting trade and investment opportunities, and strengthening collaboration within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

As part of his official engagements, President Mahama will lay a wreath at Embassy Park in Lusaka in honour of Zambia’s fallen heroes. He is also scheduled to address Zambia’s National Assembly, where he will outline Ghana’s vision for a more integrated and economically prosperous Africa.

The President will further engage with members of the Ghanaian community in Zambia, providing an opportunity to interact with Ghanaians living and working in the country.

A major highlight of the visit will be the Ghana-Zambia Business Dialogue, which will be co-chaired by Presidents Mahama and Hichilema. The dialogue is expected to create opportunities for Ghana to showcase its advancements in digital technology and fintech services to Zambian businesses and government institutions, promoting economic partnerships and knowledge exchange.

President Mahama’s visit forms part of his broader agenda to promote continental integration through improved transport infrastructure, expanded trade networks, and the free movement of people and goods across Africa.

Members of the President’s delegation include the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; Executive Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama; Presidential Advisor and Special Aide, Mrs Joyce Bawa Mogtari; and Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Mr Stan Xoese Dogbe.

Also accompanying the President are the Minister in charge of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu; Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu; Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr Samuel Nartey George; and Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.

The visit is expected to further strengthen Ghana-Zambia relations and advance shared economic and development goals between the two countries.

Police Arrest 11 Over AI Deepfake Videos Impersonating President Mahama

Published

Ghanaian police have arrested eleven suspects accused of using artificial intelligence to create fake videos of President John Dramani Mahama — and using those videos to trick ordinary people into sending money and handing over personal information.

The arrests were carried out by the Cyber Vetting Enforcement Team between May 1 and 4, 2026, following intelligence reports about a group spreading AI-generated content across online platforms. Operations were conducted across five locations in the Volta Region — Sogakope, Dabala, Tongu, Akatsi, and Aflao.

Among those arrested are both Ghanaians and Nigerian nationals. The police identified them as: Anipah Jonathan (23), Dzamesi Bright Kofi (35), Thomas Ayoyo (17), Louis Segbawu (18), Raphael Ablordeppey (32), Bishop Esiri (46), Wisdom James (25), Ali Lucky (23), Edwin Edos (22), John Kofi Darlington (20), and Danu Peter (19).

Investigators recovered laptops, mobile phones, internet routers, 120 pre-registered SIM cards, and a Nigeria-registered Mercedes Benz ML 350 bearing Lagos licence plate LSR 138HR.

According to police, the suspects used AI-generated videos of the president to deceive members of the public  convincing victims to part with money or sensitive personal data through various online channels.

“The suspects are part of a wider network engaged in the creation and dissemination of fraudulent digital content designed to impersonate high-profile personalities for financial gain,” a police situational report stated.

Nine of the eleven suspects have been remanded into police custody and are due to reappear in court on May 25, 2026. Two Thomas Ayoyo and Louis Segbawu  have been granted bail with two sureties each.

Deepfakes are AI-manipulated videos that make it appear as though a real person is saying or doing something they never did. They are increasingly being used in online fraud globally.

Mahama Hails VRA and GRIDCo Engineers as Heroes After All Six Akosombo Turbines Restored to Full Operation

President delivers good news at May Day rally in Koforidua as he pivots from grid crisis to economic reset agenda

President John Dramani Mahama has publicly commended engineers of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for restoring the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam to full capacity, announcing that all six turbines at the generating station were back online as of Thursday night following a devastating fire in the facility’s Switchyard Control Room.

The President made the announcement at the 2026 May Day celebration held at Jackson Park in Koforidua, Eastern Region, on Friday a day after personally inspecting damage at the Akosombo station.

“I know many of you are concerned about the disruptions to the electricity supply caused by the Akosombo fire, but I want to share the good news that the GRIDCo and VRA engineers working together have been able to bypass the burnt-out control room and have restarted all the six turbines at the Akosombo Generating Station,” President Mahama told the gathering.

“And so as of last night, the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam is fully operational.”

Engineers Bypass Burnt Control Room in Technical Feat

The restoration is being hailed as a significant engineering achievement. Rather than waiting for the fire-damaged Switchyard Control Room to be repaired or replaced  a process that could have taken weeks VRA and GRIDCo engineers devised a workaround that allowed them to bring all six turbines back into service within days of the incident.

President Mahama described the workforce behind the feat as a living testament to the value of Ghanaian workers, saying they represented the nation’s most important asset.

The fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre had triggered a nationwide grid crisis, forcing emergency shutdowns and knocking out an estimated 720 to 1,000 megawatts of transmission capacity — crippling power supply to homes and businesses across multiple regions.

May Day Platform Becomes Forum for Economic Reset Message

Beyond the grid restoration, President Mahama used the May Day platform to take stock of his administration’s economic performance and outline the next phase of Ghana’s recovery.

Reflecting on this year’s celebration theme “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods: Resetting Ghana Beyond Macroeconomic Stability” the President said it accurately captured his administration’s governing roadmap.

He told workers that his government had made measurable progress on the economic stabilisation front since taking office, pointing to reduced inflation, a stabilised cedi, lower interest rates, restored fiscal discipline and renewed investor confidence.

“Today, I am pleased to report that we have made significant progress,” he said, adding that while the gains were modest, they marked a decisive turning point — shifting Ghana from recovery to transformation and from economic fragility to resilience.

He was careful, however, to frame macroeconomic stability as a means to an end rather than the destination itself.

“Stability is the foundation, but it is not the house. The reset we speak of is about building that house on a stable foundation. It is about moving from surviving to thriving, and from debt distress to economic surplus,” the President said.

Resetting Ghana Tour Continues

President Mahama is in the Eastern Region on a two-day Resetting Ghana Tour, which is expected to culminate on Saturday, May 2, with a town hall meeting in Koforidua. The session will bring together students, artisans, teachers, nurses, traders, and traditional and religious leaders from across the region  reflecting the administration’s effort to take its policy messaging directly to communities.
