Ghana’s Vice-President Calls for Fair Global Partnerships: “We Won’t Accept Deals That Silence Our Voice”

Published

on

The Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged for genuine and equitable global partnerships where every country has an equal voice and fair opportunity to benefit.

Speaking at the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels yesterday, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said Ghana welcomes international cooperation but will not entertain unfair or exploitative arrangements.

“Is it a partnership where you have no voice? Is it a partnership where you don’t even decide how much you are selling your own goods for? These are the fundamental things we think deserve world dialogue,” she stated.

Global Gateway Forum

The Vice-President joined world and business leaders at the Global Gateway Forum, which serves as a platform for discussing strategies to boost global investments and partnerships. The forum, hosted by the European Commission, focuses on promoting sustainable infrastructure and development across Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Under the EU’s Global Gateway investment strategy, the European Commission and the World Bank Group are collaborating to implement 18 high-impact projects in energy, transport, and digital infrastructure—aimed at enhancing global connectivity and fostering inclusive growth.

Shifting Global Power Dynamics

During a panel discussion on the state of the world, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang encouraged African countries to take advantage of shifting global power dynamics to strengthen self-reliance and drive their own economic destinies.

“We need to move from being a battleground for others’ ambitions to becoming producers and processors of our own resources. When we enter the market on equal terms, that’s when real peace and progress will be achieved,” she emphasized.

Strengthening Partnerships

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted the importance of strengthening global partnerships built on trust, mutual respect, and shared goals. She revealed that the EU’s Global Gateway initiative has already mobilised over €306 billion in investments—surpassing its initial €300 billion target ahead of 2027.

She added that the partnership with the World Bank is being elevated to ensure better governance, alignment, and monitoring of joint projects across key sectors.

The President of the World Bank Group, Ajay Banga, also underscored the importance of job creation in sustaining these partnerships, noting that employment in emerging economies not only improves local livelihoods but also fuels global economic demand.

“By working together, we can unlock private capital and deliver impact at a scale neither of us could achieve alone,” Mr. Banga stated.

MALFUNCTIONING STREET LIGHTS FROM CIRCLE TO AMASAMAN RAISES SAFETY CONCERNS

Published

on

The absence of the functional street lights on major roads across the capital continues to pose a serious threat to motorists and pedestrians alike. Beyond enhancing night visibility, street lights also contribute to the beautification of the city , yet several key routes in the capital city, Accra , remain in darkness.

A notable example is the stretch from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange to Amasaman, which once dazzled with bright illumination and earned the nickname “Dubai” for its vibrant night appearance.

In an effort to cross-check the current state of night visibility, Kessben TV conducted a survey along the route between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. last night. The team observed that the entire stretch was engulfed in darkness, forcing motorists to rely on their high beams, which in turn blinded other drivers and pedestrians.

This persistent visibility challenge has remained unattended for a long time, raising questions about the commitment of city authorities. Residents and commuters are now asking whether the relevant agencies are unaware of the situation or simply uninterested in maintaining basic infrastructure that ensures road safety and the protection of lives and properties.

Ato Forson to Present Mahama Government’s First Full-Year Budget on November 13

Published

on

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson is expected to present the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament on Wednesday, November 13, 2025, sources within the Finance Ministry have confirmed.

The proposed date, which awaits formal approval from Parliament, will mark the Mahama administration’s first full-year budget since returning to power in 2025. It is anticipated to be a major fiscal event, setting the tone for the government’s economic direction after nearly a year of navigating global and domestic challenges.

Experts say the 2025 Budget—delivered shortly after the new administration took office—largely operated within the fiscal framework of the previous government. The upcoming 2026 Budget, however, is expected to reflect the Mahama government’s own economic vision and priorities.

As required by the Public Financial Management Act, the Finance Minister must present the national budget to Parliament no later than November 15 each year.

Broad Consultations

The Finance Ministry has concluded extensive stakeholder engagements with industry leaders, civil society groups, and development partners. These discussions helped shape key policy measures and expenditure priorities for the 2026 fiscal plan.

Focus on Jobs and Growth

Dr. Forson has hinted that the budget will focus on job creation, productivity, and innovation, with targeted investments in sectors that can drive youth employment.

The document is also expected to introduce a comprehensive tax reform aimed at expanding the revenue base while easing the tax burden on households and businesses.

Preparing for a Post-IMF Economy

With Ghana expected to exit the IMF programme by May 2026, the budget will be closely scrutinised for its post-programme economic strategy. Analysts will be watching how the government balances fiscal discipline with growth and stability.

Deficit Management and Infrastructure

Managing the fiscal deficit, debt servicing, and funding for social and infrastructure projects will also be a key highlight.

As anticipation grows, investors, businesses, and development partners await what could be the defining economic roadmap of the Mahama administration’s second year in office.
