U-20 AFCON Showdown: Black Satellites Gear Up for Fierce Battle Against Central African Republic

Ghana’s Black Satellites are bracing themselves for a high-stakes showdown against the Central African Republic (CAR) in their final Group C fixture at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with head coach Desmond Ofei calling it a “tough test.”
After a gritty 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal—sealed by Emmanuel Mensah’s first-half strike—the Ghanaian squad has reignited their quest for qualification. That crucial win came on the heels of a 1-1 draw in their tournament opener against DR Congo, putting Ghana in a do-or-die position ahead of Thursday’s clash on May 8, 2025.
Coach Ofei, while acknowledging the challenge CAR poses, is backing his team’s spirit and preparation to carry them through.
“We know the game against CAR will be difficult,” he said. “But just like we did against Senegal, we’ll fight, prepare thoroughly, and give everything on the pitch.”
With a spot at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Qatar on the line, the Black Satellites are more determined than ever to rise to the occasion and fly Ghana’s flag high on the global stage.

Officials Questioned Over 2023 African Games Scandal – President Mahama

President John Mahama has revealed that several individuals have been invited and interrogated in connection with the alleged financial scandal surrounding the 13th African Games, which took place in Accra in March 2024.
Speaking during a national update on his first 120 days in office, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, good governance, and the fight against corruption.
“The battle against corruption remains a top priority. As part of our pledge to uphold accountability, a number of officials have been invited and questioned regarding their roles in the organization and management of the African Games,” the president stated.
The event, originally seen as a major milestone for Ghana, has since been marred by allegations of financial mismanagement. Reports indicate that approximately $245 million was spent on the Games, with an additional $15 million allegedly used for feeding athletes and officials. A further $4.5 million was said to have gone into the games management system and accreditation processes.
President Mahama reiterated his promise to initiate investigations and forensic audits into major public expenditures, stressing that the probe into the Games forms part of broader efforts to eliminate corruption and prevent the misuse of public funds.
In April, former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif was questioned by the National Investigation Bureau, although it remains unclear whether his interrogation was directly tied to the African Games spending.

Schweinsteiger Backs Manchester United for Europa League Glory After Dominant Semi-Final Win

Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has tipped the Red Devils to lift the Europa League trophy following their commanding 3-0 first-leg semi-final victory over Athletic Club.
United delivered a dominant performance in Spain, with a brace from Bruno Fernandes and a goal from Casemiro giving them a strong advantage ahead of Thursday’s return leg. The result also preserved their record as the only unbeaten side across all three European competitions—Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
While their domestic campaign has been underwhelming—potentially ending with their lowest Premier League finish and points tally—United have found renewed form in Europe. Their convincing win over Athletic Club highlights a team finding its rhythm at the right time.
Schweinsteiger, who played for Manchester United during the 2015 season, told Flashscore that he’s optimistic about his former club’s European prospects.
“With Bruno Fernandes controlling the midfield and young players stepping up like Alejandro Garnacho, they’re building momentum,” said the Bayern Munich legend.
“The match against Athletic impressed me a lot. After the red card, it boosted players’ momentum to play. I wouldn’t be surprised if they go all the way and lift the Europa League trophy. It’s about picking the form at the right time.”
United will look to bounce back from their weekend loss to Brentford as they prepare for the second leg against Athletic Club. A victory could set up a potential Europa League final showdown with Spurs on May 21.

U-20 AFCON: Ghana eye first win after draw with DR Congo

Ghana U-20 forward Abdul Hakim Sulemana says the Black Satellites are determined to secure victory in their next outing at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after a frustrating 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their Group C opener.
Despite being named Man of the Match, Sulemana expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to convert their chances, but remains optimistic about bouncing back.
“We gave it everything, but unfortunately, we didn’t make the most of our opportunities,” he said.
“We’ve learned from it, and in the next game, we’re going all out for a win.”
“Every chance we get, we’ll take it. We’re going to defend better and make sure we come out with the three points.” he added.
The Black Satellites, like all teams in Group C, have one point following Senegal’s 1-1 draw with the Central African Republic.
Ghana now turns their focus to their crucial second group game against Senegal, where a win could see them take a big step toward qualification.
Kick-off is at 6:00 p.m. local time.
